The Shaping of Things to Come: Chapter Two

The Millennia Co-Op of the Pomona suburb of LA is a provocative concept with its 1) art lounge store-front, 2) art studio basement, 3) design group attic, 4) electronic dance club, 5) martial arts dojo, 6) and last but not least, indiginous faith community (aka church). It seems to be quite a nexus of culture. I’m interested in how they strike the balance between “doing what the culture around them does” and “leading the culture in a new direction”. It’s the contrast of the thermometer vs. the thermostat (a thermometer that reads the temperature and influences it).

The Red Krizlehous, [nlcf]’s protoypical “street”-level urban rental space, comes immediately to mind. Will this space become a nexus of culture in downtown Bburg, with doors open in incarnational indiginous cultural expression? Is there an indiginous culture into which a nexus can even be set up in downtown Bburg? Is this the hedgehog of [nlcf]? Do we even want to get into such messiness? I can’t help but think that despite our best intentions, the building will serve as a typical church multipurpose room with FUBU events. FUBU, as you may know, is a major line of sportswear widely considered an acronym of “For Us By Us”, although in its initial year of conception was regarded as meaning “Five Urban Brothers United” (Wikipedia.)
